In one of the most usual and creative side quests that you can stumble upon in any Elder Scrolls game, A Brush With Death kicks off with rumours of a missing painter in Cheydinhal. It speaks to the fascination of this particular quest that even 17 years on fans of the game still remember it fondly.

After you rock up at their house the painter’s wife gives you the key to her husband’s study and you notice one of the paintings looks weirdly alive and is actually a door.

Click on the door and bam, you’ll have found yourself transported inside the painting and face to face with the very excited painter, Rythe Lythandas, who is hoping you’re about to get him out of there. Turns out a stolen magical paintbrush is at the core of this dilemma and you’ll need to do battle with painted trolls (by using turpentine, of course), and paint a portal out of the realm to make it home.

It’s a short but sweet excursion from Tamriel and an especially clever side quest in a game filled with memorable moments.
