9 Most Inventive Video Game Levels You Need To Play

2. Barbara - What Remains Of Edith Finch

While we’ve told you a few times about the unique excellence of the Lewis Finch level of What Remains of Edith Finch, it’s not the only stand out level in this very clever story-driven puzzle game. The story of Barbara Finch is uncovered by Edith in the form of a comic book that becomes interactive as you read through it.

While the game is peppered with the stories of each of the Finch family members who die in various unusual ways, Barbara’s tale is one of the most obscure.

Told in the style of something akin to Tales from the Crypt, we learn about Barbara and her early found fame as a scream queen who lost her ability to perform her signature scream as a teenager. You’ll be led through the narrative before playing through sections yourself. To say too much more would be to spoil it but both the story, the underlying suggestion of what really happened to Barbara, and the unique mechanics used to convey the vignette, are all very effective.

I’ve definitely said this one before but if you like video game narratives and haven’t tried your hand at What Remains of Edith Finch, get it on your to-play pile.
