9 Reasons For Honor Is Ubisoft's Most Polarising Game In Years

4. Gameplay Mechanics That Feel 'Cheap'

Ask yourself whether you're someone who'll play a game purely for the challenge, or more for enjoyment. If it's the former, you've probably already sampled something like Dark Souls, Bloodborne or Nioh, and if it's the latter... well, you probably have too, only to throw your controller out the window.

For Honor's barrier for entry is certainly far lower than something like the latter couple, but it does come with a mix of game mechanics designed to keep you on your toes.

The biggest of those being labelled 'cheap', is the Guard Break. At any point you can hit square/X and smash straight through an opponents' defence, following that up with an unblockable hit. Repeated use will drain stamina, but unless you commit to a guard break yourself and double-tap the button to 're-break' through an opponent's animation (something that's VERY hard to do timing-wise, as these moves are very fast), you'll be left reeling, time and time again.

Another 'strategy' players are trying out is sprinting away from combat during a duel, finding the various power-ups that buff attack or defence, and then resuming the bout. They're able to do this because your stamina doesn't drain when running, ostensibly 'encouraging' this rather cowardly way of playing.

It's something for the 'time will tell' pile, but being For Honor's beta was only a few days and players were highlighting these aspects within hours, doesn't necessarily bode well for the lifespan of the full game.
