9 Scariest Moments In Non-Horror Video Games
3. Shalebridge Cradle - Thief: Deadly Shadows
Ion Storm's stealth masterpiece was firmly routed in the stealth genre, but it's precisely because you thought you knew what to expect, that Shalebridge Cradle is so damn terrifying.
Changing genre on a dime, now you were slowly exploring a dank, decrepit asylum, one murky corridor at a time. Excellently atmospheric sound design comes with pockets of distant noises and flickering lights, hinting at the idea that you're not alone. With the level almost entirely in pitch black, text entries from doctors or patients are the only thing keeping you company in between light sources and occasional zombie attacks.
Eidos would pay tribute to this level in 2014's Thief, maintaining the eerie atmosphere but also opening the orphanage-turned-asylum with a demonic face staring at you through the first keyhole.
Thanks guys. I didn't even WANT to sleep tonight.
