7. You're A Better King Before You Become One In Fable 3

The Fable series is well known for over-promising and under-delivering; one glance at a Peter Molyneux press conference will tell you that. Even the big man himself has declared his disgust for Fable 3 though; a game built around becoming King of Albion... only to realise that being King is apparently the most tedious job in the entire world. It all begins reasonably well though. The beginning section of the game sees you traversing Albion on a quest to encourage various groups to back your revolution against the tyrannical King. Usually, most groups want you to give them something once you ascend the throne; for example, Page (leader of the Bowerstone Resistance) asks that you improve the lives of the Bowerstone Citizens when everything is said and done. You're forced to make these promises to build your forces but choosing to keep them comes later. Despite not wearing a crown, this first section is where the Hero actually acts like a King. You journey across Albion, forging alliances and bringing peace to the various communities of the nation. You're improving the lives of your future citizens and that's why the people of Albion back your revolution in the first place. Then, when you ascend the throne, the game sticks you in one room where you dictate (and potentially ruin) the lives of people, showing you the changes you've just made through a short cinematic. Even if you decide that these decisions are for the betterment of the nation (after all, there is a big evil force waiting to invade the land), surely a good king would go out of his way to see the changes he's making first hand and explain why they need to be done? In many ways, you act far more kingly in Fable 3 before you take the throne... surely power doesn't corrupt that quickly?
