9 Times The Wii Remote Speaker Actually Improved Gameplay

2. Wii Play Motion: Spooky Search

Before the Wii U gamepad started asking players to search their own front rooms and bedrooms looking for hidden items (hunting for blocks in LEGO City: Undercover) or ghosts with Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water, the Wii Motion Plus Remote was being used for similar searches in Wii Play: Motion.

In one minigame that called to mind cult classic Luigi's Mansion, Spooky Search asked players to become ghostbusters, trapping ghosts into a central contraption using the pointer of the Wii Remote. Miis were on-screen to give helpful hints like: "It's above you!" or "Behind you!" and "It vanished!"

Of course, since this was pre-Wii U, once the remote was pointing off-screen, there was no way of seeing what you were looking for. Instead, the trusty Wii Remote speaker would play noises to indicate where the ghosts were. Players then had to trap them and lure them back to the TV screen in order to capture them.

The concept of searching your own surroundings before Augmented Reality games were taking off was brilliant and the theatrical nature of the game with the Miis watching and encouraging your every move only added to the experience.
