8. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Episode 51
One of the better known and resulting much maligned missing endings that fans didn’t get to see is the deleted Episode 51 mission from Metal Gear Solid 5. Kojima said the mission, entitled Kingdom of the Flies, was only 30% done when he and his former company unhappily parted ways and so it didn’t make it into the final cut of the game. It was included on the collector’s edition blu-ray, however, so there’s plenty of spots online you can now check it out.
Most importantly, the story makes a lot more sense with the additional mission.
You’re planning to track down Metal Gear Sahelanthropus, Eli, and the child soldiers he brought with him. Eli is also infected with the vocal cord parasite but the children are immune. A cutscene shows Snake creeping into their base and a violent fallout with Sahelanthropus as piloted by Eli and the Diamond Dogs. Snake takes a big hit making him temporarily colour blind for reasons making him unable to detect Eli’s red suit among the XOF soldiers. As a result he unintentionally shoots Eli. He survives and rails against Snake for being just a copy of him. It’s all quite sad and extraordinarily well done for an unfinished cutscene.
And we can only imagine how awesome this episode would have been had we been able to play it ourselves.
