Next to Resident Evil, you’d struggle to find a survival horror game more pivotal than Silent Hill. The pasty little goth boy next to Capcom’s gun toting thrash rocker, the game has been very quiet in recent years whilst the latter largely goes from strength to strength following the 2017 reboot in Resident Evil VII.

Why the silence? While those out of the loop may wonder, anybody with a passing knowledge of the gaming landscape knows that the coffin was sealed following the acrimonious falling out between publisher Konami and video game auteur Hideo Kojima, who had just inspired nightmares globally with his ‘Playable Teaser’ in collaboration with film director Guillermo Del Toro.

Following creative and corporate disagreements over the handling of the Metal Gear franchise, Kojima departed the Konami fold under a bitter cloud, and scuppered the project that his horrifying PT had promised: Silent Hills.

7 years later we are still without any forward momentum on the franchise, short of the iconic Pyramid Head appearing in Dead By Daylight, but rumours have abounded for years concerning a potential reboot in the Resident Evil vein. Reports seem to have been gathering a substantial amount of momentum over the last year, with indications that multiple games could be in development, with horror loving studios like Until Dawn’s Supermassive Games and Layers of Fear’s Bloober team potentially attached.

Whatever levels of excitement this may inspire though, following up on the terrifying legacy of the original trilogy, after so many disappointing sequels, is going to be a tough job for any developer. Not only that but, in the wake of the heartbreak of Silent Hills’ cancellation, and Konami’s subsequent bungling of the Metal Gear franchise following Kojima’s departure with Survive in 2018, the question has to be asked, will anything live up to what might have been?
