4. Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem

An acquired taste, to be sure, but it'll be interesting to see how this most distinctly Japanese of JRPGs gets received when it makes the trip over to US and Europe in 2016. The game, as the title frankly reveals, combines the universes of super-popular (in Japan) RPGs Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem. Set in a super-fluourescent anime take on modern-day Tokyo, players control a trio of teenagers with visions of stardom who must rise to fame using their entertainment talents, while also fighting off an army of extra-dimensional beings invading the human realm. It's an odd one - very odd - but looking beyond the strange celebrity/battle against evil concept and the obligatory lecherous pans up the legs of short-skirted Japanese teenagers, it's a glitzy, sparkly tactical RPG with a deep combat system and pacey turn-based battles. Working out the enemies' weaknesses is crucial, and pulling off satisfying chain attacks among multiple characters (or 'artists') builds up their relationship, allowing for more devastating combos in future battles. If yo're a fan of either of these iconic yet niche series, then you'll love this. If not, then you'll know within seconds of watching the trailer whether this is something you can possibly engage in.
