The Theory

Found within the stomach of the Zone Eater on Triangle Island, Gogo is a playable character in Final Fantasy VI whose true identity has always been a bit of a mystery. Fans have posited that he could be either Emperor Gestahl, Banon, Famed Mimic Gogo from Final Fantasy V or, most famously, Darill, Setzer's old friend.

It's very much a case of an answer springing forth into a vacuum.

The Rejection

According to director Yoshinori Kitase, Gogo actually has no secret identity nor a backstory: there's basically only mystery there because there's no story to tell.

He responded to the theory specifically in an interview to debunk it and to explain why:

“That’s probably not true. I don’t think there’s any background setting like that. If that’s true, then because Darill had that beautiful ending, if [she] ended up being Gogo, that would just destroy all that.”

At the same time, he confirmed that neither Gogo nor Umaro had any sort of backstory:

"They were just there for you to select if you want them to be in battle.”
