It wasn't terribly surprising that Josef Fares' follow-up to Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons had a sting in its tail, though few likely expected it to go this way.

A Way Out places yourself and a pal in the shoes of two convicts, Leo and Vincent, who are plotting to escape prison.

At the end of the game, it's revealed that Vincent is in fact an undercover cop, placing the two men at odds and prompting Leo to seek violent revenge against him. This instantly flips the cinematic split-screen gameplay on its head, forcing the players to attempt to take each other down.

The final playable sequence sees both men on the roof of a warehouse and reaching for a gun. Only one player can grab the gun and shoot the other, resulting in different endings depending on who survives.

If Leo lives, he delivers an apology letter from Vincent to his wife Carol and skips town with his family, but if Vincent lives, he pays Leo's wife Linda a visit and breaks the news, before quitting the police force to be a husband and father.

Though it's not particularly unique from a story perspective, Fares did a fantastic job forcing players against one another after they'd spent hours working together. It was a great twist, and being able to soak the moment in with a friend only made it that much cooler.
