9 Video Game Plotlines You Didn't Realise Were Based On True Stories

4. The Cat Lady

Persona 5
Harvester Games

The game: Far removed from the stereotype that its name suggests, The Cat Lady mashes together the mundane with psychological abstract to spin a tale about the life of Susan Ashworth, a chronically depressed, friendless, feline-loving woman who decides to take her own life.

The grim premise soon eschews its seemingly grounded narrative for a wild affair that sees Susan bestowed with the gift of immortality by the Queen of Maggots and asked to cleanse the world of five psychotic individuals, or 'parasites'.

Infused with incredibly timed dark humour and a nuanced character portrait of someone struggling with mental health issues, Harvester Games' graphic adventure is a gem not to be missed.

The inspiration: Polish-born creator Remigiusz Michalski birthed the idea for The Cat Lady while working as an auxiliary nurse in Exeter. As per interviews following the release of his passion project, Michalski confirmed that the character of Susan was inspired by an unnamed individual close to his personal life.

Fair warning: you'll never look at cats the same way again after experiencing The Cat Lady's finale.
