9 Video Game Plotlines You Didn't Realise Were Based On True Stories

The game: As is inevitable with all franchises as long in the tooth as Dynasty Warriors, the crowd-based combat series has experienced its fair share of highs and lows, though one constant has always persisted at its core: showstopping conflicts between one guy or gal (you) and a battalion of grunts heading to their inevitable slaughter by your hand.

The series is now on its ninth main instalment and boasts an eye-watering 83 playable characters, all with their own armoury's worth of masterfully crafted weaponry and, for the first time, an open world to explore and conquer in the usual setting of 3rd century China.

The inspiration: Recent entries in the franchise have progressively diverged from the source material with non-historical elements, but traditionally, Dynasty Warriors has been loosely based on Records of the Three Kingdoms, a historical Chinese text written by Chen Shou that details the collapse of China's central Han Dynasty and the resulting rise of three warring states wrestling to take advantage of the power vacuum.
