9 Video Games That Almost Took GTA's Crown

7. The Simpsons Hit & Run

Arguably the best game to capture the flavor of the classic animated series, this 2003 entry takes the obvious idea of "GTA Springfield" and runs wild with it. All the actors from the show provide voice work and the script is as sharp as any Simpsons episode with inevitably funny lines and nicely done 3-D cut scenes. Running around this replication of Springfield is like a fan's dream as it allows exploration of landmarks like Moe€™s Tavern and the Escalator To Nowhere and as with the series, you can enjoy slews of background gags and Easter Eggs. The €œplot€ involves bee cameras and aliens but frankly it doesn€™t matter really. What matters is how you can buy outfits from the show (Bartman, Policewoman Marge, 800 pound Homer), drive around Springfield looking for coins, side quests involving Krusty, Millhouse and others and enjoy a brand experience that even GTA cannot compete with. The Simpsons motif elevates this over GTA in a big way, but it's just a shame that the story-lines and gameplay couldn't quite match up to the fan experience or what Rockstar offered even with GTA III.
