9 Video Games That Got Away With Being Total Rip-Offs
7. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
What It Ripped Off: Super Smash Bros. There's something magical about bringing every single Nintendo character into a game and having them try to murder each other. The Smash Bros. games are a love letter to Nintendo fans, paying homage to the company's rich history with little nods and easter eggs at every turn. By 2012 Sony had been around long enough to develop a diverse range of iconic characters of their own, from Parappa The Rapper all the way to Nathan Drake. They decided to make their own answer to Smash Bros. and the result was... Smash Bros. with Sony characters - only with more boredom and a lot less charm. The ridiculously named PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale felt like Smash Bros. after it had the life sucked out of it. Nintendo somehow manages to pull off mixing all of its art styles together in their Smash games, but seeing Sweet Tooth beating the hell out of Parappa The Rapper just didn't look right at all. It's like Yoshi suddenly appearing as Marcus' long lost friend in Gears Of War. It's weird, jarring and unsettling. It didn't completely copy Smash, though and Sony at least came up with a unique idea for the combat system. Knocking your foes out of the stage could only be done by performing a special move. To do that, you had to fill up your AP meter by dealing damage to your enemies. It was a bit of a marmite mechanic, with some some players thinking that it made the action less unpredictable, while others thought it gave the game a unique focus. Alas, PASBAR (that seriously has to be the worst abbreviation ever) wasn't the success Sony hoped it would be and didn't sell that well. Maybe having a less silly name and more unique ideas would have helped.
