9 Video Games That Got Away With Being Total Rip-Offs
6. Crash Team Racing
What It Ripped Off: Mario Kart. There have been many games that have attempted to duplicate Mario Kart's success over the years. A recent example being the Sonic And Sega All-Stars series, but at least they differentiated themselves a bit with awesome mid-race vehicular transformations that turned your kart into a boat or a plane. Crash Team Racing, however is pretty much a straight-up Mario Kart rip-off. With that said, it's a pretty damn good rip-off. The controls are just as responsive as Mario Kart and the game can be almost as fun at times. Just like in Mario Kart, you race around courses, powersliding around corners and using wacky weapons on your fellow racers whenever you get the chance. Weapons did work a little differently in Crash Team Racing, however. You could collect fruit to make your weapons arsenal more powerful, which is a pretty nice touch. It also had boss races similar to those found in Diddy Kong Racing, so it effectively ripped off two games at once. Impressive! Crash Team Racing is a great game and could very well be the finest rip-off that ever existed (even its final lap jingle was eerily similar to Mario Kart's). But to Naughty Dog's credit, they knew exactly what they were doing when developing this game and were successful in making a decent Mario Kart clone for PlayStation owners to enjoy.
