9 Disastrous Video Games That Totally Killed Their Consoles

4. Nintendo 64 - Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage (2001)

2001 was a good year for Sony. Not only had Shenmue II bombed for Sega, but Nintendo were taking one last shot at putting out a decent Role-Playing Game for the N64, and failing miserably. This type of game is notoriously scarce on this console, with RPG developers of the day Enix and Square both deciding to concentrate their efforts on the Playstation, preferring the disc format to the old cartridge that the N64 took. THQ were given the green light to develop something that might change Nintendo€™s fortunes in this area of gaming; Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage. Though both the Ocarina of Time and Majora€™s Masks were commercial and critical successes, those Legend of Zelda games are the only real stand out titles from a small list of RPGs. The First Mage was the last of its type to see the light of day on this soon to be doomed platform, and it certainly helped to speed up the process. Set in world of wizards and knights and everything you€™d expect to find in a typical fantasy, this game was finally going to scratch an itch that N64 owners had been complaining about for years. While The First Mage delivered on in its promise to deliver an expansive 3D world, the battle system €“ the bread and butter of any self-respecting RPG €“ is clunky, awkward and only barely serves its purpose.

Phil still hasn't got round to writing a profile yet, as he has an unhealthy amount of box sets on the go.
