9 Video Games That Will Leave You A Changed Person
1. Outlast
Outlast caused a storm in the gaming community after its release on PC in 2013. From a studio made up of former Ubisoft veterans, Outlast is the epitome of a raging independent success story, and it also happens to be one of the scariest, most unsettling games to ever hit the mainstream and find wide ranging success.
You play Miles Upshur, an investigative journalist who received an anonymous tip that there are unseemly goings on at an abandoned asylum deep in the Colorado mountains. So like any sensible person in this world, Miles goes to investigate. What he finds there is genetic research on asylum inmates, making them incredibly strong, violent, and even more insane than they would have been on admission.
Blood soaked walls, destroyed buildings, and pitch black darkness await you as you venture into Mount Massive Asylum and that's before the Variants (the term used to refer to the enemies in the game) start hunting you. You see, Miles isn't a fighter; there are no weapons to be picked up in this game. If you're spotted by an enemy, you will be chased and you will need to run and hide. Some enemies will chase you further than others. In particular, the beast that festoons all the promotional artwork, Chris Walker, will chase you relentlessly throughout the game and will appear when you least expect him, only the jangling of the chains around his wrists being your early warning of his impending presence.
Outlast is a game that will unsettle you to your core as every little innocuous sound will have you jumping, and if you're scared of the dark, the constant wash of night vision from Miles' camera will tear your nerves to shreds. This game will chew you up and spit you out as a broken, shivering, twitching wreck on the floor, and it's completely worth it because if you can stand it, it's a damn fantastic game and well worth the time you will put into it. Just don't play it with the lights off: you'll regret it.
