Before MGS became known for lengthy cut scenes, endless character monologues, and confusing storylines, it was one of the PlayStation's greatest games, and had a plot that you could just about follow.

As the intrepid Solid Snake, you are tasked with infiltrating the Shadow Moses island compound, after a renegade special forces unit leads an uprising and takes control of the base. That the base is holding nuclear warheads understandably has the top brass concerned, so they decide to send a single person in to diffuse the situation. Yeah...

Either way, cue one of the best stealth games ever made as you work your way through the members of FOXHOUND one by one, dispatching them in ever more elaborate boss fights after sneaking your way past cameras and soldiers that happen to have the attention span of an absent minded kitten.

What Hideo Kojima and his team at Konami managed to put together was nothing short of sublime, a mix of great gameplay, inspired design, and some of the best fourth wall breaking gags ever seen (having to find the codec frequency to contact Meryl from the back of the ACTUAL game box was an inspired piece of copyright protection).

The way the game builds up the tension to the final battle between Solid and Liquid Snake is perfection. The denouement consists of taking out a giant bipedal robot that is firing missiles at you, a fist fight between Solid and Liquid only for them to move on to a machine gun battle in the escape tunnel on the back of a jeep being driven at ridiculous speeds. When the final credits run, you take a deep breath and you are guaranteed to feel like a bonafide badass.

I am a man of many interests. I am a passionate gamer, running my own YouTube channel (The Gadget Addicts) showing off the best of modern gaming in the form of Let's Play videos. I am an ardent musician, having been a guitarist for the past 13 years. I am also a massive geek, I adore science fiction and fantasy films and TV shows and am trying to work up the courage to start writing a novel. If I can ever think of a good story to tell... I live with my wife in the North East of England and own a belligerent little black cat.
