Assassins' Creed IV: Black Flag has the player take control of Edward Kenway - a swashbuckling captain who sails through the West Indies to battle the Templars during the Golden Age of Piracy. On your travels, you will battle and ally with many of history's most infamous pirates including Charles Vane, Calico Jack, Anne Bonny, and Blackbeard.

Although sailing was a minor factor in the previous entry, it is an integral part of the gameplay this time around. Captaining the mighty Jackdaw, you can use your vessel to find buried treasure, discover new land, and battle enemy ships. Although these tasks aren't always necessary, they are extremely helpful.

By plundering ships and obtaining coin, you can fortify your ship's armour and enhance your weapons. These upgrades are invaluable near the end of the game since Man O' Wars will blast your Jackdaw to pieces in seconds unless it's heavily reinforced.

Another side-quest which is worth your time is tracking down the Mayan stones. By obtaining all of these artefacts, you'll be rewarded with the Mayan Stelae armour, which renders you bulletproof. Pursuing these tasks will take quite a bit of time but will make the final sections a lot easier.
