5. Creator Chris Roberts Literally Rescues The Protagonist - Wing Commander

1999's movie adaptation of the classic space combat franchise Wing Commander is an especially bizarre case, as the film was actually directed by Chris Roberts, the creator of the series itself.

Despite having no filmmaking experience whatsoever, Roberts decided to helm the film as it was funded by his own production companies.

The result is one of the most infamously terrible video game movies ever, and Roberts also couldn't resist the opportunity to give himself a sneaky cameo.

There's nothing inherently weird about a filmmaker putting themselves in their own movie - hell, Hitchcock did it all the time - but Roberts ends up casting himself in the pivotal role of a rescue and recovery pilot who saves protagonist Maverick (Freddie Prinze, Jr.) at the very end of the movie.

Moreover, he opts to linger on his own grinning mug for a beat too long as his character salutes Maverick, which for anyone familiar with the man is sure to prove intensely distracting.
