After Skyrim: 10 Awesome Predictions for the Future of the Elder Scrolls Series

9. In-World Technological Advancement

Throughout the Elder Scrolls series so far we seem to have been stuck in a relatively perpetual state of technological development. While that€™s worked well for the series so far, isn€™t it time Bethesda started looking at ways to reinvent the mould? For my money, the next full game shouldn€™t just represent another swords and spells adventure but rather an evolution of the tried and tested Elder Scrolls formula. That€™s why for the next Elder Scrolls game I€™d be interested to see technology begin to feature more heavily across Tamriel. I€™m not saying aggressive technology; I€™m not saying Guns and Pip-boy 3000€™s. I€™m just saying that maybe the next Elder Scrolls should be set several hundred years after Skyrim; that they€™ve had their industrial revolution; that maybe magic is now fully considered science. So we€™d still wield swords, bows and spells, but we might have a quest that involves defending Tamriel's first cross-country steam engine from bandit thieves on horseback. Hey wait, it€™s an Elder Scrolls game, but it feels like a Western. This is the kind of thing I think the series needs if it€™s to remain fresh; a new angle, a new experience. I€™ll happily play the same basic game again of course, but if Bethesda Softworks want to remain the RPG developers, they need to keep it fresh.
