9. Squid-eo Game References
Every time you catch a creature in Animal Crossing, your character will deliver a little pun. The most notorious one from New Horizons is, of course, "I caught a sea bass! No, wait - it's at least a C+!" The pun will be the same every time you catch that particular species, with one notable exception - the squid.
The squid is the only animal in the game to have been assigned more than one pun. In fact, it has three. One of them is "I caught a squid! Do they...not actually 'bloop'?" which is a reference to Blooper from the Super Mario series. The remaining two are "I caught a squid! It's off the hook!" and "I caught a squid! I had an inkling I might!," both of which are references to the Splatoon franchise. Inklings, of course, are the main characters in Splatoon, while "Off the Hook" is the name of a pop music duo from the series.
Both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the Splatoon games were produced in part by Japanese video game designer Hisashi Nogami, which likely explains the inclusion of these references. Additionally, both Villager and Inkling are characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which could provide yet another reason as to why they're in the game.
Nevertheless, this is a fun little homage for anybody who picked up on it.
