Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 10 Things We Learned From Nintendo Direct

As expected, Nintendo is planning on supporting this game through periodic free updates over the course of its life. One of the main components of these updates are going to be special in-game events.

For those of you who played the previous games, you’ll remember various events and holidays that would happen at certain points of the year. A lot of these were clone events to real world holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. Apparently these are not included in the base game, but instead being rolled out as part of these free updates instead. Its an odd choice not having these in the game to begin with, though

The first update will be available on the same day the game launches. It will include the first major holiday Bunny Day (the Easter analogue) that will occur in April. We can probably expect a lot more of these as time goes on, and the content of these updates can vary greatly.
