Anthem: 10 MASSIVE Fan Complaints Bioware Can't Ignore
9. Lack Of True Progression
In most games, and looter-shooters in particular, character progression is a fundamental gameplay component. Think of where you begin in a game like Devil May Cry, Pokemon, Fallout, or even Destiny, and where you end. Your character transforms, becoming substantially more powerful, better equipped, and an all-round ass-kicking machine.
Compare that to Anthem, in which you end exactly as you began. This is true in both the gameplay and even your character's appearance. When you begin the game, your Javelin is one of four archetypes and you can alter its appearance somewhat (a point we'll come to in another entry), but as the game progresses, you don't unlock awesome new armour and accessories that showcase your level or experience.
Then there's the lack of any true gameplay progression. The loot drops in Anthem are a gigantic issue, and coupled with the weapon stacking problems, you have an experience that never grows. From the time you fight the first handful of wolves and Scars, to the final boss fight, you never get much more powerful; you may as well just keep the same weapon equipped, and your abilities don't scale either to any interesting degree.
It's an unrewarding experience to sink 30, 50, 70 hours into a video game and not feel like you've achieved anything or improved in any way.
