5. Use Ice And Electric Attacks On Shielded Enemies

We've covered Primers and Detonators, but like Destiny and various other loot-shooters, you're going to come up against shielded enemies that say "no" to your onslaught, no matter what.

In this case, bust out the Ice and Electric attacks. Ice comes with a 25% buff against shielded foes, whereas Electric doubles that to 50% bonus damage. Taking down shields is best done by freezing them with a Primer, then Detonating with as many lightning attacks as possible.

Done as a Ranger, you get the bonus damage from a Combo, plus the 'Lightning vs. shield' boost, AND the Ranger's ability to add bonus damage to a single target as the Combo is triggered.
