Anthem: 9 Things It Must Learn From Mass Effect Andromeda
8. Squad Commands
Where did they go? Who knows. Why were they removed? Beats me. Alas, of all the things Andromeda did wrong, actively removing perfectly functional components from the trilogy was one of the most egregious. No longer could you pick and choose your squadmates' loadouts in the field, nor could you tell them to deploy specific powers on different targets. Instead it was "Go there and take cover/shoot at things", or "Stop doing that and come back".
Nothing more, nothing less.
For Anthem, we know the game has a huge focus on cooperation and group-based powers, but we're yet to see whether a competent A.I. is in place if you want to play offline or solo. In fact, we don't even know if the game can be played offline at this stage, though being there are millions of Mass Effect fans looking for a suitable followup, Bioware would be remiss not to target the fanbase they helped build.
Speaking of which, where Mass Effect handled its squad powers with the action pausing and a rotary wheel of options popping up, Dragon Age gave you an overhead camera to literally point and click where you wanted specific characters to head.
Some kind of hybrid between the two would be ideal, if indeed Anthem is going to have a more considered, tactical edge.
