Anthem: 9 Things It Must Learn From Mass Effect Andromeda

7. Combat That Truly Innovates On What Went Before

Although it felt like a big departure from the Mass Effect trilogy at first, Andromeda's opening up of every single biotic power at the very beginning ultimately destroyed all progression thereafter. Plus, the playing of Andromeda didn't move anything forward from where Mass Effect 3 left off - save for a dedicated boost button on the ground and in mid-air.

The latter did speed things up, but fundamentally you were still busting out the same sets of powers and moving between cover points at relatively the same clip - the point being that despite Bioware's attempt to 'open up your options', third person cover shooting was still the order of the day.

In Anthem it looks like cover has been obliterated, though the same three quick-access powers are still on-hand, as is Andromeda's usage of boosters to aid in movement. We actually see the demo character take flight and dive deep underwater too, though whether battles and bosses will take place across land, sea and air, Monster Hunter-style, remains to be seen.

Ostensibly, we need to see some truly different combat mechanics at play, be they in-flight duels, mounting large creatures/mechs for takedowns or even a meatier melee system. ANYTHING that distances Anthem in a meaningful way from what went before.
