Assassin's Creed: 10 Most Shocking & Heartbreaking Moments

8. James Kidd's Death (Black Flag)

Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Ubisoft

Through swash-buckling adventure Black Flag, young pirate James Kidd (also known as Mary Read) remains one of Edward Kenway's greatest allies, even going so far as to save his life and vouch for him with the Assassins. She is Edward's moral compass through much of the game's sequences and continues to have faith in him becoming a good man, even when he himself does not believe it possible.

As a result, while Edward loses a number of friends through the course of the game, Mary's death at the hands of the Templars is particularly hard to take in. After being tortured and imprisoned in Kingston while pregnant, she becomes too ill to escape when Edward launches a rescue attempt, and her dying words to him are a final plea for him to redeem himself.

It's the sort of scene that makes you question if we need Oscars for voice actors, and the emotional turmoil behind this beautiful yet awful moment is so powerful, as it is the final turning point for Edward on his path to redemption.
