Assassin's Creed: Syndicate - 8 Signs Ubisoft Learnt Nothing From Unity

3. A Female 'Protagonist' - Where's Evie?

Well this is strange, as on May 11th a fresh rumour from Kotaku pertained to having a second playable character in sister of main character Jacob; Evie, appearing for around quarter of the campaign. Since then the official reveal had her nowhere to be seen outside a couple of cutscene appearances, with Ubisoft barely commenting on her involvement. Now, it's possible this could be something unveiled further down the line (most likely at E3), but as the general idea of brother and sister tackling the oppressive cultural context of Victorian England together is a brilliant one, Ubisoft really should've opened with it - especially if Evie's sections are anything to write home about. If we're going off rumours and the occasional writeup that delves into specificity, the Fryes do appear throughout the story together, with their own respective skill tree and missions - but for what little the developers do describe, Evie is resigned to a more advisory role than anything too hands-on. Plus, all these same rumours that 'confirm' her involvement mention she's only around for 25% of the campaign anyway. It's Jacob you'll be spending the most time with. It's very possible that her cutscenes (and playable sections) were some of the last things added to the game after the world had been built, and her inclusion (that's so far almost voiceless) only exists as a direct response to last year's controversy where an Ubi rep mentioned programming a female character would be too much work. Let's be honest, although the information available is touting her as a separate character, she'll 99% surely play and animate exactly the same as Jacob, making her nothing more than a skin-swap in-game.
