Avengers Beta Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs
3. Another Pointless, Off-Putting Stat Grind
You'll know if you're going to enjoy this game based off your reaction to the above screenshot.
If it's "Wow, cool! So much to unlock and upgrade, I can't wait!", you're good.
If it's "Bleurgh, there's WAY too much going on and honestly, that looks like a chore", you're going to have a problem.
We don't have a term for "triple-A mobile game", but that's what this feels like. A game that includes a pointless grind where multiple pieces of identikit gear are unlocked and powered up with crafting components, missions are re-run over and over, or you can pay to bypass the slog for better costumes.
Factor in how long this has been in development (before 2017), the fact it's a freakin' Avengers game and that Square Enix forced Eidos to put microtransactions in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and it's no wonder this has been "geared towards maximum revenue".
Avengers may not have loot boxes but there's a massive artificial grind and bloat here. Even just from the beta it's one I have no doubt you'll be encouraged to pay your way through in the coming months.
