Avengers Review: 3 Ups & 8 Downs

1. It Potentially Has A Great Future

I'll say this: What Crystal Dynamics have built is ambitious as hell.

So much of the game feels like it once existed as a story-focused title, only for publisher whims or industry trends to push development towards live services and content over time, but if we take what's released as entirely intentional, there is a way to look upon that positively.

The idea of a game that "plugs in" enemy encounters into a live environment - lets you know when someone like Abomination is rampaging through the city and YOU and your friends need to respond - is a great idea.

You can see the seeds for this already. The potentially super varied roster, the loot system letting players spec in specific ways, so when the time comes THEY can respond to a threat by playing a key role in any squad.

Story events, limited access to specific modes - some of these have been talked around or shown as coming in the near future, but time will tell as to their actual quality.

Marvel's Avengers has immaculate animation and environment detail too - these are great play-spaces in theory - and that should make for a title that grows alongside a dedicated fanbase.

Sadly though, right now there are far too many negatives that need smoothing over or eliminating entirely.
