Baldur’s Gate 3 is Larian Studio’s most recent attempt to create a video game based on the beloved table-top RPG, Dungeons & Dragons, which non-players will know as one of the most complicated board games to ever be developed.

Since the studio took it on themselves to incorporate the 5th edition Player’s Handbook of the franchise into their newest title, it goes without saying that Baldur’s Gate 3 can be quite complex to someone unfamiliar with the rules.

In fact, the situation is almost worsened by the developer’s choice to not hold gamers’ hands, calling on them to figure out a vast majority of these rules for themselves.

But don’t worry, as that’s where I come in! Having spent over 30 hours playing the early access build and dealing with the numerous bugs that have come with it, I am ready to present you with some tips and tricks that are sure to help even the most experienced of role players.

So whether you’re a beginner battling to find your feet in the magical realm of Faerûn or a battle-heavy veteran looking to improve their gameplay, let's explore various essential tips and tricks you need to know.

11. Avoid Conflicting Categories In Character Creation

Baldur’s Gate 3 comes with an incredible character creator, but since there are so many options available it's quite easy to feel overwhelmed. This is especially true when so many of the selections contradict one another. To avoid being engulfed by these choices, start by choosing your class, as this decision will determine what other choices remain viable for your character build.

A warlock, for example, needs a charisma ability score that is pretty high, as this will determine his spellcasting ability. As such it will be best to choose a race for your character that is quite charismatic, such as a tiefling or half-elf, which both receive an additional 2 ability points added to their charisma score.

So be sure to check which ability scores need to be the highest for your selected class, and then make the rest of your decisions based on this knowledge. A warlock with a high strength but low charisma ability score will battle to land a hit on enemies and be virtually handicapped for the remainder of your playthrough, after all, so pay attention or pay the price.
