As any long-time Bat-fan can tell you, the current 'vision' for the character in the DCEU is a far cry from those of the comics. Let's just say, a faithful rendition of Batman needs an assault rifle like he needs the ability to kill cars-worth of goons, which is why it's far better to delve back into the past and grow both Bruce Wayne as a character, and 'the Batman' as an entity.

Arkham Origins already tapped into some of this furtive soil, showing how Bruce and Jim Gordon came to trust one another, and even let us play as the Joker, watching the Clown Prince realise his destiny is forever intertwined with that of the Dark Knight.

At this stage, Arkham Knight put a pretty solid bow on the whole "Joker lives inside Batman's mind" storyline, and even Arkham VR couldn't take it any further than "Yup, he's still in there". Yet, for as much as Origins was chastised for being 'too much of the same', if we can jump back into a completely morally-centric Bat, see the formation of the Rogue's Gallery and prove our worth to Gotham's denizens in the process, that's a far more engaging and nuanced setup than what came after.
