Battlefield 2042 Review: 6 Ups & 6 Downs

3. Battlefield Portal Has Incredible Potential

Ever since Battlefield 2042 was announced, Battlefield Portal has been the one thing the fanbase has been able to fully get behind.

Led by Ripple Effect, this suite allows fans to make their own custom game modes by mixing and matching weapons, factions, maps, classes and vehicles from Battlefield 2042, Battlefield 3, Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 1942.

It’s been marketed as a love letter to fans, and that is absolutely felt in the suite at the moment. Jumping into Bad Company 2’s Rush mode, for instance, with its remastered maps and authentic-feeling combat pace and weaponry, is a dream come true for fans longing to see that sub-series return. Even if you don’t jive with the new content in 2042, there’ll be something here for you.

Likewise, the tools given to you to create custom matches are extensive, with players having unprecedented levels of control over their own servers.

However, it should be noted that as good as Portal is, it’s only a start. Currently most of the "imaginative" game modes players have come up with are XP farms, and the XP cap DICE has included to make sure people don’t abuse this suite for levelling like this does feel particularly restrictive.

This is a mode that’s going to live or die on both community support as well as DICE adding content - let’s just hope they don’t let this gem of a mode languish post-release.
