Battlefield 2042 Review: 6 Ups & 6 Downs

1. The Sense Of Scale Is Insane

Much has been said about the game’s implementation of storms and weather effects. Rather than each map being static and locked to a specific time of day, throughout matches they’ll be hit with different weather that changes the texture of the environment. Sometimes this is a simple downpour, but other times you’re hit with extreme sandstorms or tornadoes.

It’s during these moments where the scale of Battlefield 2042 really shines. Seeing the giant wall of sand roll into a level provides an evocative backdrop to fight against, and overall adds to the intensity of each bout. It might be a bit of a gimmick, but it does make 2042 look and feel unlike any other shooter on the market.

The added verticality to the maps is also a plus. While it’s a shame there isn’t much of a middle ground, reincorporating skyscrapers, huge towers and massive tankers into maps makes them as tall as they are wide. Fighting at different levels keeps the action flowing, and adds more dynamics to combat.
