With the last few titles being themed around WWI and WWII, it would be fair to perhaps assume a continuation of the franchise's forward motion through history and expect a game based around the Vietnam War or Cold War. However, some insiders have seemingly indicated the new Battlefield release will be more 'modern' than most gamers are anticipating.

This hint has led forums and groups to consider modern conflicts or fantasy wars the game could be based around. Perhaps EA will follow in the footsteps of THQ and create a Homefront-inspired story on a war with Korea. Other users posted suggestions including a setting of Syria or Iraq, a conflict with the rising China or even a created take on a WWIII.

Whatever the decision is, the game must show more focus on the location and the effect of the conflict the story guides the gamer through on the environment surrounding it. Despite impressive depictions of locations in past titles including Norway, the Gallipoli Peninsula and France, these were mainly presented as historical backgrounds rather than the kind of environmental focus and importance shown in the likes of the Far Cry series.

Perhaps the creation of a nation such as Kyrat (Far Cry 5) will create a memorable experience the likes of which has always evaded the Battlefield series.
