Before GTA V: 10 Classic GTA Features That Caused Major Controversy

9. Racism? - Throughout GTA

Any use of a pejorative slur, directed at any race, colour or creed, will always garner controversy along the lines of "was it racist, or was it contextually acceptable?" If you've played any GTA at all, you'll have heard the characters drop slurs towards every race under the sun and without even skipping a beat (there are many N bombs dropped in San Andreas for example, but then you can argue that this goes with setting). Of course, it isn't just terms that GTA's army of critics like to demonise; in Vice City for example, as Tommy Vercetti, you're encouraged to incite violence between gangs of Haitans and Cubans, sparking many to claim that GTA, amongst other things, encourages racial hate crime. And many actually argue that San Andreas' entire presentation of its characters is in and of itself racist to its very core. I'm not so sure it is myself; at least if it is, then that means any movie set amidst African American gangland is too. Still, racism is an accusation that gets leveled at GTA repeatedly and I'd be very surprised if the hatchet wasn't dug up once more for V.
