Bethesda & Ubisoft's Pirates Of The Caribbean Game: Forgotten For A Reason?
1. Rightly Forgotten?
I feel like if the game remained a sequel to the original Sea Dogs, no-one would have bought the game in the first place, but as a tie-in to a rapidly growing franchise, it’s fairly disappointing. So we kind of hit that grey area where without the name it’s nothing but with the name and being a blatant cash grab, it was quickly written off.
In retrospect, it’s certainly nothing to write home about but its interesting to see where companies like Bethesda and Ubisoft started, particularly with the latter making a true pirate adventure a decade later. Some influences from this title can be seen in that, as well as the RPG elements in some of Bethesda’s later games.
Are these comparisons purely coincidental? It could well be but seeing the similarities between this game and some of the others these two companies would produce later down the line, it’s certainly possible that Pirates of the Caribbean was a starting off point for their future.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for an incredible pirate RPG then you’re better off grabbing Black Flag. But if you want to look back at the history of two juggernauts of the gaming world and are still craving an open-world Pirates of the Caribbean (particularly after the promising Armada of the Damned was shelved all those years ago) then there are certainly good things in this game that deserve appreciation.
It’s definitely a little piece of buried treasure that should be dug up once again. Not gold, but a bit of bronze.
