Black Ops 2: 10 Reasons CoD is No Longer the King of Online Multiplayer

10. €˜XP€™ Is Old News

I remember a time, back when the first Modern Warfare first came out, when CoD€™s multiplayer mode represented something if not entirely new, then at least sufficiently overhauled that it at least felt new. Here was multiplayer that had been expanded upon to include RPG elements, making it necessary for you to suffer through an initial vanilla weapons loadout until you€™d €˜levelled€™ enough to unlock upgrades. Players now had something to strive toward; not just an impressive kill: death ratio (although that too) but also an impressively levelled character. Nowadays, every other game and their dogs have this levelling system included, each CoD game since certainly does, and at this point, the whole thing is simply old hat. I argue that the market is ripe for some clever innovator to come along with a fresh idea for online multiplayer. How long until this happens? It€™s hard to say. But when it does, unless said innovation comes directly from Treyarch, CoD€™s various online communities are probably in trouble.
