Black Ops 2: 20 Reasons To Be Excited

18. A Compelling Villain

As if acknowledging one of the most frequently spouted problems with modern FPS games - especially those which prefer realism over pure entertainment - Treyarch have promised that BLOPS 2's villain Raul Menendez will be a genuinely compelling bad guy, and one of the greatest in gaming history. A bold claim indeed, but with the suggestion that the foundation of his personality were influenced by sources as rich as The Sopranos and Dexter - or in other words, genuinely three-dimensional characters whose malevolence has a balance in logic, and we even find ourselves sympathising with them. That is going to be a bold move, especially after the "War is Hell" sentiments of Modern Warfares 2 and 3 and their infamous controversy-baiting levels which seemed more content to paint grander pictures of the evils of war, rather than personifying those ideas. But a good villain can drive a plot a damn-sight more than a good protagonist, as it encourages the gamer to engage more with the game's ultimate end-game, and that can't be a bad thing at all. http://youtu.be/KQv90T800kw
