Borderlands 3 Wishlist: 10 Things That Must Happen
2. Bigger, Badder Bosses
Borderlands 2's endgame bosses are to traditional raiding - the multifaceted and extremely intricate fights seen in such games as World of Warcraft and Guild Wars - what little league basketball is to the NBA: a downplayed and forgiving entry point. But with games like Destiny (perhaps only Destiny) demonstrating how involved an end-game experience you can craft in a first-person shooter, it's time Borderlands joined the big leagues. A mechanic here or weakness there has done little to distinguish Pandora's top-shelf beasties from their everyday counterparts. More often than not, they're simply packing stupid amounts of health and offensive power. So much more can be done with Borderlands bosses, especially with four players and, therefore, multiple roles in each team. Sirens are second to none in support roles, Commandos can crowd control with the best of 'em, and Assassins and Gunzerkers can deal more burst damage than anyone. What's more, new and inventive roles are constantly being explored through creative skill allocation and the addition of Vault Hunters. Quite frankly, bosses need to step their game up or they will be left behind. To apply another lesson learned from Destiny: Don't underestimate players.
A freelance games writer, you say? Typically battling his current RPG addiction and ceaseless perfectionism? A fan of horror but too big a sissy to play for more than a couple of hours? Spends far too much time on JRPGs and gets way too angry with card games?
Well that doesn't sound anything like me.
