7. Chasing Overwatch And Fortnite

For the longest time, Call of Duty was the biggest trendsetter in the industry. Changing the way everyone viewed online multiplayer and first-person shooters in general, the industry scrambled to chase what Activision were doing. Somewhere along the way though, this dynamic was flipped.

Once Respawn introduced the gaming world to wall-running and jump-packs with the original Titanfall (which, when it was revealed, genuinely looked like the future of multiplayer shooters), Activision attempted to retrofit Call of Duty with the same style of gameplay. Since that proved to be a mistake though, they're once again attempting to change their online suite to catch up to the competition: this time Fortnite and Overwatch.

Rumours swirled last year that Black Ops 4 would be altering its multiplayer to be more team-oriented and hero-driven, essentially acting as a modern-military Overwatch, which the reveal seemingly confirmed. While that's bad enough, BLOPS 4's battle royale mode, Blackout, is clearly a play by Activision to get a piece of the Fortnite pie.

It makes sense for Activision to chase trends, but history suggests that CoD is at its best when it's playing to its own unique strengths.
