Call Of Duty: Ranking Every Game Mode From Worst To Best
12. Capture The Flag/Retrieval
Capture The Flag is a staple of any first person shooter, and remains ever present in each Call of Duty release. It has undergone tweaks throughout the years such as the addition of rounds, but the core concept remains the same. The actual capturing element is often a suicide mission given that a typical team will have several players that aim directly at their flag waiting for an unsuspecting victim.
Outmanoeuvring these can be difficult given that killing them results in their near immediate respawn, whilst being successful can be short-lived if a lack of support is given from teammates (such as those that have refused to move from their own flag). The fact that the carrier can shoot is only so useful when rushed from two or three locations at once.
The mode is at its finest when both flags have been taken, as neither team can score whilst their home flag is not present. This necessitates a frantic split between defending an ally and hunting an opponent. Too frequently is it the case that the game is over in just a few minutes when the majority of players defend and a singular one forsakes their stats to rush the flag over and over, however.
The mode wasn't actually present in the first Call Of Duty, though Retrieval, an interesting twist that gave players just one life apiece per round, was there in its place. It's long overdue a return.
