Long before EA and DICE's Battlefield 1 was looking back through history and presenting us with a game that had more of a serious angle on catastrophic events, Infinity Ward gave us Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. During the mission 'Aftermath' you witness a nuclear blast at close range and die from the explosion.

There was no glory, no heroism - just death.

Without stepping into the historical debate of the rights and wrongs of the dropping of two Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States in 1945, they were a significant moment in both World War II and 20th century history.

If Sledgehammer really are looking at giving gamers a "gritty" experience as their marketing materials is suggesting, perhaps the controversial moment in WWII could be witnessing one of those nuclear blasts in Japan.
