Call Of Duty: WW2 Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs

2. Yes, There Are Loot Boxes

In recent months there has been a tremendous amount of scrutiny of AAA video games which feature loot boxes as a means to get players psychologically addicted to what is effectively in-game gambling, to the point that they splash real-world cash on a greater chance to get those sweet, sweet unlocks.

Well, Call of Duty is the latest victim of the craze, with players earning loot boxes from playing online, which drop down from the sky in the Headquarters social space and will unlock cosmetic items and XP boosts for yourself and your squad.

Somewhat strangely, taking part in the loot box nonsense raises your Social Score, which apparently enhances your chance of getting better loot as it increases.

Now, in fairness, at present the loot box system is strictly an attempt to get players hooked and keep them playing, but it's easy to be sceptical of Activision, them loving money and having plugged microtransaction nonsense into previous CoD games after reviews have dropped.

It's certainly not pay-to-win, at least not yet, but it's still a lame, unsavoury gimmick that the game could absolutely do without, and you know the paid stuff is probably coming soon.
