7. Native Fortress

The conclusion to the first island in the game, Native Fortress, proves to be both a challenging and beautiful level, combined with a memorable tribal theme and striking colours.

Following the Papu-Papu fight in the last level, Native Fortress acts as a gateway between the first and the second island. Not only is the music one of many fans' favourite tracks from the original Crash Bandicoot, but the level design and slow climb to the top of the fortress make it one of the most fun.

Some of the best levels in all of Crash Bandicoot (more so in the original) are when the game simply focuses on the platforming without any gimmicks. This is one of those levels, where the main objective is simply to get Crash out of the Native Fortress and towards the next set of levels.

The secret Gem route in the stage also leads to a path above the fortress made out of clouds, revealing a beautiful view of the next two islands and Cortex's castle in the sunset. This view, as well as the stand out tribal theme that permeates the whole level, makes this one of the most exciting levels from Crash Bandicoot to be remastered for the visual treat alone.

Jumping through portals, swinging through cities, destroying beings made of darkness and occasionally shooting a gun or two. I also write about games.
