Crash Bandicoot: Ranking Every Game From Worst To Best

8. Crash Bandicoot

The one that started it all and made an instant icon in the process, the original Crash title still typifies the core gameplay and character of the franchise - even the characters been misconstrued since - despite its cracks beginning to show due to its age.

Entitled "Sonic's ass game" in early development, the revolutionary platformer propelled not only the new star to unofficial mascot status for Sony's superlative debut console, but eventually created a pop-culture dynasty which is still beloved to this day!

Which may be subject to the necessary name change of its main character; from Willy the Wombat to what we know today as Crash.

Outside of the distinctive aboriginal aesthetics, which also defined the series and immediately differentiated it from its contemporaries, the ensemble of unique bosses and enemy types are personified madness.

The whole game feels akin to a Saturday morning cartoon, with wacky occurrences, death screens and animations more expressive than watching Looney Tunes on LSD and unravelling the extra layers (gems, relics etc.) gave the game a level of depth challenged only by Super Mario 64 upon release.

However, it's hard to pretend - or even defend - the level of brevity it now has since gaming has evolved to where it is today. Not to mention the exsasperating password system. Let's be honest, there was only one input for this screen, you know, the one with the three triangles at the start?
