For those of us that weren't exactly enthralled, or interested in the illustrious Mario Kart, we became enchanted with an alternative, icon-starring racing game in the 1990s; Crash Team Racing. A still criminally under-appreciated rival to Nintendo's racing juggernaut and one that holds up surprisingly well today.

Considered the last entry into the golden age of Crash Bandicoot, Crash Team Racing was clearly intended to be the final chapter in the Bandicoot's saga, capping everything off in a perfect, more lighthearted swansong. One that both capitalised on the franchise's popularity while still being an endearing love letter to fans.

Not only influential in the way it captivated a lot of the Mario Kart audience, it also innovated certain aspects of the kart racer genre that have now become standard, almost intrinsic, mechanics.

The addition of a drifting/skid-based mechanic that allows the player to build up acceleration from the landing impact was as satisfying as it was gratifying. The roster was quite expansive for a PlayStation one title and brought back a majority of fan favourites while introducing new characters altogether and the level of depth gave the game substantial replay value.
