These days if you're getting out your old copy of Crash Team Racing, all you need to do is Google the Penta Penguin cheat code and boom, you've got the cute little penguin as a playable character.

Back in the day though, it wasn't so easy. Most players played through the game, beat it, unlocked all the different characters through usual means (tried absolutely everything to unlock Oxide too), but still didn't have Penta Penguin in their roster.

That's precisely why he's number one. Penta was a very rare gem; a tightly kept secret. Penta was Mew underneath the truck, except he was real. Now, he's just another character and his ranking is considerably lower for the Nitro Fueled edition, but the first game? That was his day in the sun, no doubt about it.

His stats too were absolutely off the charts.

If you had him, there was an unspoken rule that picking Penta was cheating. Sometimes this rule wasn't unspoken, but shouted loudly through a mouthful of Pringles.
